Heat director Michael Mann was hospitalized with minor injuries after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Halloween.
TMZ confirmed the news with local authorities and the filmmaker’s representative today. Mann was reportedly sent to the hospital for treatment and is in the process of being released.
“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” his representative said this morning. “He was treated and is being released.”
Mann is known for his role in developing some of the biggest crime dramas of the last 40 years and, as noted by TMZ, is a highly experienced target shooter himself. The site described the incident as having occurred during a training exercise of some kind, with its sources saying the 83-year-old director had no intention of harming himself. Additional details are unclear.
An ambulance ride to the hospital is probably not how Mann wanted to spend his Halloween in Los Angeles. While the accident took a bite out of his weekend, the filmmaker is currently putting the pieces of his long-awaited Heat follow-up together behind the scenes.
Our first big confirmation that the ball was rolling for Heat 2 arrived in February of this year when The Dark Knight star Christian Bale confirmed he was set to start filming the movie in Chicago soon. Inception’s Leonardo DiCaprio boarded the project in July, with both he and Bale then reportedly said to play Chris Shiherlis and Vincent Hanna, respectively. Filming was expected to begin in November, this month, at the time.
Mann is also responsible for movies like Ferrari, Public Enemies, and Manhunter. Also expected to appear in Heat 2 are Adolescence’s Stephen Graham and The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Story details about the follow-up aren’t completely clear, though we do know that it will have Mann’s novel of the same name to lean on.
