Fans React to Shrek 2 Remastered’s Surprising PC Requirements

Shrek 2 isn’t exactly pushing the bounds of PC graphics, but the recommended specs for the remaster are surprisingly hefty. Originally released in 2004, this remaster boasts better textures, enhanced UI, 4K resolution — and, it seems, a beefy PC.

According to the Steam page, to even run Shrek 2 Remastered you’ll need a GeForce RTX 4060 or RTX 3060 Ti graphics card or equivalent. The developer recommends a GeForce RTX 4070 or RTX 5070 to get the best experience. What have they been feeding him? “Those swamp graphics better be baller,” said one X / Twitter user. Another complained that they’re able to run Red Dead Redemption 2 at the highest settings, but their PC would apparently struggle with this makeover of a 22-year-old game.

“Seems a bit much for a remaster of a GameCube game but if that’s what we need to render Shrek’s highly detailed green skin then so be it,” said another Twitter user. “They went full in with the GTA 6 aesthetics,” said another.

Other posts expressed concern over it being a “vibe coded” remaster, but there’s currently no AI disclosure on Steam to suggest that’s the case. Valve asked developers to specify when they use AI during game creation or marketing.

Shrek 2 Remastered was revealed alongside a trailer that parodied GTA 6, and is set to launch just over a week before Rockstar’s behemoth, on November 10. Despite the parody trailer, no one expected it to have similar graphical demands as GTA 6, but here we are. You’ll need 12-16GB of VRAM for this beast. It’s a bit ogre the top.

The remaster is developed by port specialist Aspyr, the studio behind Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition, Deus Ex: Remastered, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, and the disastrous Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection.
