Google has released its top 10 most-searched Halloween costumes, and unsurprisingly, Nikki Freeman from Obsession and Buddy the Unicorn are two of the most popular searches this year.
Obsession released in May to rave reviews, skyrocketing actress Inde Navarrette to international stardom (later earning her the role of Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot). Discourse surrounding the film went viral, and Nikki Freeman even became a wandering character at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights.
It’s little surprise, then, that Nikki is the third most-searched Halloween costume this year on Google, as told by the platform’s ‘Frightgeist’ page. Google Frightgeist is an interactive website that aggregates all the search trends surrounding spooky season, including horror movies, couples’ costumes, pet costumes, and general costumes that are trending the most.
Obsession took two of the top spots in these categories; according to Frightgeist, Nikki is the third most-searched Halloween costume overall, with Buddy the Unicorn in first place and Needoh (a type of tactile squish toy) coming in second. Google says that “red zebra halter top” was searched more than ever before following Obsession’s release in May, a top that’s worn by the character in one of the movie’s pivotal scenes.
Here’s the Top 10 list of trending Halloween costumes this year on Google:
- Buddy the Unicorn (Buddy)
- Needoh
- Nikki (Obsession)
- Agamemnon (The Odyssey)
- Lily Love Braids (Poppy Playtime)
- Oliver Tree
- Verity (Minecraft)
- Carl (Dungeon Crawler Carl)
- Disco Scooby Doo
- Hazel Hook (Descendants)
Nikki and Bear were also the third top-trending couples’ costume on Google, beaten out by Disco Scooby and Shaggy in first place and the X-Men’s Cyclops and Jean Gray in third place. (Alright, the internet might have good taste this year.)
However, Obsession was nowhere to be found in Google’s Top 10 most-searched horror movies; instead, films like Buddy, Other Mommy, and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil made the cut. The Top 10 searches are listed below:
- Buddy
- Other Mommy
- The Whisper Man
- Passenger
- Brute
- Insidious: Out of the Further
- Resident Evil
- Arachnaphobia
- Hokum
- The Backrooms
It’s been an extremely good year for horror films, with small-budget productions and indie projects proving to be especially popular among moviegoers. In fact, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms enjoyed such success that it kicked off a major trend in the industry, with similar creepypasta projects like Siren Head, The Mandela Catalogue, and even The SCP Foundation getting greenlit for future film adaptations.
