With Prime Day happening now, it’s the perfect time to save on some of our favorite nerdy hobbies. Countless games, hardware, accessories, and movies are on sale, but there are even dozens of comics included at nice discounts. You can browse a ton of trade paperbacks, omnibuses, and compendiums at slashed prices, all from the typical publishers you’d expect like DC, Marvel, and Image, but even some graphic novel adaptations of popular works, like The Hobbit, are available.
Prime Day runs until Friday, June 26, and some graphic novel deals are only available as daily Lightning Deals, so be sure to check back often to see what books are on sale.
Omnibuses and Compendiums
One of my favorite ways to read comics are omnibuses and compendiums (the difference is hardcover vs. paperback). Sure, they may be huge, heavy, and more pricey, but having the entire story and even some extras in one convenient package works with my impatient brain. Also, these spines do look really cool on a bookshelf. Here, I recommend checking out Invincible Compendium Volume 1 (of 3) as a way to not only get the first chunk of Robert Kirkman’s superhero story, but experience an independent comic that slightly goes off track from what you’d typically expect from a comic like this. Venomnibus by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman is a very entertaining reinvention of Venom. This arc also gave us the first appearance of the villain Knull, god of the symbiotes.
Trade Paperbacks and Standalone Graphic Novels
Many standalone stories are printed as trade paperbacks. Or if you don’t like the clunkiness of a compendium, you can grab smaller paperback volumes of ongoing series, like Jonathan Hickman’s Spider-Man Vol. 1: Married With Children. Hickman also wrote Secret Wars, which I recommend checking out before Avengers: Doomsday drops in theaters later this year. Some standalone are hardcover, like Alan Moore’s classic Batman: The Killing Joke. The sale also includes a handful of manga like Berserk and Junji Ito’s Uzumaki, both available as hardcover deluxe editions with plenty of extras included.
Graphic Novel Adaptations
There are plenty of preexisting stories that have been adapted to this visual medium over the years. The Hedge Knight: A Graphic novel is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but with bespoke art to bring each vignette story to life. The Hobbit, abridged by Chuck Dixon, is in a similar vein at its lowest price ever. The Bloodborne slipcase set includes the first three volumes of the video game adaptation, with some really impressive art. And Dungeon Crawler Carl’s popularity is at an all-time high, so checking out the print adaptation of the popular webtoon is a good place to start.
Read Digital Comics
If you prefer to read comics digitally, I wouldn’t blame you — it’s much more convenient and even cheaper. But speaking from experience, reading comics on your phone can be a bit cumbersome. So I recommend checking out the Kindle Colorsoft, which is also on sale for Prime Day. This tablet is one of the best for reading digital comics thanks to its adjustable screen and high-contrast display makes comic pages really pop.
