Paramount may have canceled the animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after two seasons, but that doesn’t mean fans won’t get to spend more time in this quirky universe before the next Mutant Mayhem movie. IDW is back with another Tales of the TMNT comic series, one with a distinctly summer theme.
IGN can exclusively reveal Tales of the TMNT: Coastal Chaos, a new limited series that brings the Heroes in a Half-Shell to the Jersey Shore and inducts the villain Armaggon into this animated universe. Check out the slideshow gallery below to see all the covers for issue #1:
Like the previous volume, Tales of the TMNT: Coastal Chaos is written by Andrew Joustra (who also scripted the animated short film TMNT: Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey and works as a script supervisor on the Mutant Mayhem films) and illustrated by Louie Joyce. The first issue features covers by Joyce, Khary Randolph and Emilio Lopez, Pizza Mert, and Chalky Wong.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water…Tales of the TMNT is back! The Turtles once again head down somewhere grimy, smelly, and wet—the Jersey Shore. (Sorry, New Jerseyans!) What starts as a fun family vacation turns into coastal chaos when Mikey almost gets attacked by something with big teeth, a big dorsal fin, and big…arms?! We’re gonna need a bigger shell…
“I’m beyond excited for the opportunity to keep telling Tales and work with Louie again,” Joustra tells IGN. “After our sci-fi adventure with Fugitoid, we thought it would be fun to throw the turtles into the deep end with an all-out thriller. They’ll be heading to the beach for some sand, sun, and surfing, but their fun is cut short with the arrival of a certain apex predator. While shark attacks for humans are rare along the Jersey Shore… turtles, on the other hand, are definitely on the menu.”
“It’s been so much fun playing in the Tales of the TMNT sandbox and I’m stoked to be returning for Coastal Chaos!” said Joyce. “I had a blast drawing Metalhead, Fugitoid and robots galore in the last series, but we’re shifting to full-on mutant action for this one! Featuring a whole bunch of familiar faces and a (very scary) new one making their debut in the Tales universe! Cue that iconic theme from that beach movie that scares us all silly.”
Tales of the TMNT: Coastal Chaos #1 will be released on September 9, with a final order cutoff of August 3. You can preorder a copy at your local comic shop.
In IGN’s Tales of the TMNT review, Tyler Robertson wrote, “The first half of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never reaches the heights of Mutant Mayhem. But it still plants a unique flag in the ground by beautifully reimagining the film’s animation style, retaining most of the key elements that made Mutant Mayhem amazing, and telling a story that delves into the psyches of the individual Turtles. The return of Nicolas Cantu, Brady Noon, Shamon Brown Jr., and Micah Abbey and the personal journeys their characters embark on give uss even more reason to care about the already-lovable versions of these iconic characters.”
