Lucasfilm and Disney announced Tuesday that the original Star Wars film from 1977 and the upcoming movie Star Wars: Starfighter will debut in IMAX 70mm in 2027.
Star Wars will be presented in IMAX for the first time to mark the classic’s 50th anniversary. It will be available on digital and film when it’s re-released in theaters on February 19, 2027.
“Part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration, the newly restored version of the original movie, later renamed Star Wars: A New Hope, will be shown across a select number of IMAX 70mm film locations as well as playing in select theaters for a limited time,” according to StarWars.com.
Star Wars is also getting its first Welsh-language dub release for the film’s 50th anniversary next year.

Director Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in theaters on May 28, 2027, the 50th anniversary weekend of the original Star Wars’ premiere. Starfighter was filmed with IMAX cameras and converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for release in select IMAX theaters.
Star Wars: Starfighter – which took inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders to tell a story about marginalized people from the “wrong side of the galaxy” – recently showed its first trailer at D23.
Starfighter follows Gosling’s pilot Kade Auberon, who teams up with a kid (newcomer Flynn Gray) on an adventure that, although only set about five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will not feature any “legacy characters” nor any “remixes” of John Williams’ iconic themes in its score.
