Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has given a disappointing update on the future of his Marvel character Dane Whitman, better known as Black Knight.
Harrington joined the MCU as part of an extraordinarily starry cast in the 2021 sci-fi blockbuster Eternals. But despite Eternal’s end credits promising that its superhero team would return, no mention has been made of the characters since, following the film’s poor critical and commercial performance.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige admitted back in 2022 that there are no plans for an Eternals 2 at the current time, and there’s been zero word to suggest this has changed in the meantime. But perhaps more than any other character in the Eternals, fans have long held onto hope that Harington could still reprise his role someday — if not in a full sequel then perhaps in another project.
Fans have long wanted Marvel to announce a Midnight Sons team-up movie, and still hold hope one may materialize eventually. Not only could Harington return without the rest of the Eternals, it would also be a neat place to feature Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider following his introduction. And hey, Mahershala Ali’s Blade could appear there too!
But, for now at least, Harrington has suggested this is not on the cards. Talking to Movie Web, the actor said he wasn’t aware of any invitation to rejoin the Marvel universe.
“I’d love to [return],” Harington began. “I don’t think there’s any plan to. I hate to break it to you.
“I think he’s a wicked character,” he continued. “There’s a part of him, that whole Ebony Blade stuff, where the more he kills the worse he gets, the more addicted. I think he’s such a great parable of addiction. I think he’s someone who starts good and goes bad. But we’ll see, I don’t know if there’s any plan.”
Marvel has its next few years fully mapped out, with Avengers: Doomsday this December, and Avengers: Secret Wars due in December 2027. The following year sees Marvel’s next phase kick off in style, with X-Men, Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3. As for Harington himself, the actor previously passed on the chance to return as Jon Snow in a rather depressing-sounding Game of Thrones sequel series. Last month, it was confirmed he will play Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, replacing Superman star Nicholas Hoult.
